Tour de Toona-Stage 5
Jaffa Mosque Road Race

Stage 5 was a 90.1 mile road race that traveled through the local mountains
surrounding Altoona, Pennsylvania. The first 20 miles of the race consisted
of rolling terrain where the field was content to remain as one. Therace
heated up as Team Intersports began sending off attacks, following thefirst
"hot spot" sprint. The AutoTrader.com Team offered assistance by counter
attacking each move by Intersports. These big efforts lasted from miles20
to miles 35. At mile 45, the peleton saw the first of three 3000 foot
climbs, at which point Genevieve Jeanson took the bull by the horns and
attacked the field, never to be seen again. The strong climbers movedto
the front at this point and set tempo until an elite group of riderscleared
themselves from the splintered pack. AutoTrader.com's Amber Neben crested
the first climb with Pia Sundstet (Intersports). The two began the descent
in hot pursuit of Jeanson, but with only Neben doing the work. A groupof 9
riders, including AutoTrader.com's Kim Smith, were close behind thetwo
chasers. Instructed by AutoTrader.com Team Director Mike Neel, Neben
commenced her chase to wait for the larger group. The chase group, now12
riders, crested the 2nd climb together. As the group of 12 entered the
final feed zone, located at the bottom of the 3rd and final climb, Roz
Reekie attacked the small chase group. Sundstet was in position to react
and joined Reekie. The two stayed away until the finish and placed 2ndand
3rd in the stage.

The 6th and final stage of the 2001 Tour de Toona was the Downtown Altoona
Criterium. The course was mostly flat and just under a mile in length. The
course provided several turns to test the riders cycling skills. Again, all
the teams were in search of a stage win in this final stage. The fieldwas
aggressive but stubborn, enough to stay together, and looked as thoughthey
were going to settle for a field sprint. But with 5 laps remaining inthe
race, Genevieve Jeanson (Rona) and Kim Davidge (Saturn) escaped and stayed
away to the finish. Davidge took the stage, Jeanson was 2nd while LauraVan
Gilder (VeriZon) won the field sprint for 3rd.
